Bay Area Coalition of Deaf Seniors Citizens, Inc.

The BACDSC was conceived in 1996, dedicated as a support and advocacy organization for deaf seniors. It followed by seven years the Deaf Senior Housing Project Committee (DSHP). It is a 501(c)3 charity organization, federal ID #94-3223015 and is registered as a domestic nonprofit corporation with the office of the California Secretary of State. BACDSC’s paid membership roll has averaged 500 members.

While BACDSC serves the general interests of deaf seniors and is augmented by several committees, most of its focus has been on the 26-member DSHP Committee’s attempt to provide deaf-friendly economical housing for deaf seniors.

After studying other models of deaf senior housing nationally, BACDSC and Satellite Housing Inc. (SH) designed an approach through which deaf representatives would serve on the board of a new owner entity to have ultimate control over the development and implementation of service programs.

This collaboration led to the founding of the 9-member Deaf Senior Retirement Corporation, Inc. (DSRC), made up of three members from BACDSC, three from SH, and three from community members familiar with the deaf community and housing development issues.

DSRC has developed a 51-unit deaf-friendly, economical housing complex on a 2-acre site in Fremont. Groundbreaking took place May 2003, construction to began in December 2003, with completion in April 2005.

BACDSC sponsored the San Francisco-2005 DSA Committee (SF-2005 DSA) to host the Deaf Seniors of America (DSA) national conference in 2005 in San Francisco.

Other activities sponsored by BACDSC for seniors in the San Francisco Bay Area are card games, workshops, barbecue/picnics, and special holiday luncheons. A newsletter, Senior Quest, is published and distributed quarterly to members.

Representatives from autonomous deaf seniors groups in Fremont, Hayward, Modesto, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Jose, San Leandro and Walnut Creek are also involved in BACDSC decisions and activities.
